Scientific Truths in the Qur’an ‘Alaqah’ as a ‘Leech’
Surah Al-Hajj (22:5) speaks about the creation of humans and uses the word ‘Alaqah’ to refer to early stages of embryonic development
‘Alaqah’ is a clinging substance or a ‘leech’ like clot - signifying the initial attachment of an embryo to the uterine wall during pregnancy.
But there is also a great similarity between the shape of a leech and an early embryo
The Expanding Universe
“And the heaven We constructed with strength, and indeed, We are [its] expander.” Qur’an 51:47
It was only after the development of the radio telescope in 1937, that the expansion of the universe was established.
Early Universe in a state of ‘smoke’
“Then He directed Himself to the heaven while it was smoke…” Qur’an 41:11
The science of modern cosmology indicates that at one point in time the whole universe was nothing but a highly dense and hot gaseous composition - ‘smoke’
The Lagoon nebula is a cloud of dust and gas in space. Scientists now observe new stars forming out of ‘smoke’ they are created from vast clouds of dust and gas.
The Orbital Movement of the Sun and the Moon
“And it is He who created the night and day and the sun and the moon; all in an orbit are swimming.” Qur’an 21:33
This verse highlights the intricate balance and order in the universe, also emphasising the precise movements
They move outward, like ripples from a stone moving across the surface of a pond. The word used by God to describe the movement of planetary bodies is yasbahoon (swimming).
This concept of movement of the sun, moon and other planets is in perfect harmony with recent scientific discoveries.
In 2015, gravitational waves were discovered for the first time using LIGO. These gravitational waves squeeze and stretch anything in their path as they pass
The Qur’an on Mountains
“Have We not made the earth a resting place? And the mountains are stakes (pegs)?” Qur’an 78: 6-7
Mountains have been proven to have underlying roots, deeply embedded into the ground (shaped like a peg).
The Qur’an on Seas and Rivers
“He released the two seas, meeting [side by side]; Between them is a barrier [so] neither of them transgresses.” Qur’an 55: 19-20
Science has now proven the Mediterranean sea water is warm, saline and less dense compared to the Atlantic ocean
and so when Mediterranean sea water enters the Atlantic they do not mix or transgress this barrier.
Chlorophyll - The Green Pigment
“And it is He who sends down rain from the sky, and We produce thereby the growth of all things. We produce it [khadran] greenery from which We produce grains arranged in layers…” Qur’an 6:99
Emphasising that there is a ‘green’ factory
in the plants which produces grains, which we now know as Chlorophyll - an essential component for the growth of plants alongside the process of rain.
